Diet: molluscs, crustaceans, insects and earthworms.
Reproduction: they are monogamous birds that nest between June and November. The nest has 3 to 4 eggs, the incubation period is 30 to 34 days, and the chicks fledge at 6 – 7 weeks and become independent after 8 – 9 months.
Distribution and Habitat: Endemic Australian species, however, it is also found in New Zealand, Indonesia and New Guinea. It lives in open pasture areas close to watercourses.
Behavior: They have a bone spur on each of their wings and have a very strident vocalization, also giving them the name “alarmbird”. During the nesting season, the male exhibits very characteristic defensive behavior.
